NYC Subway & Bus Information

The NYC Subway and Bus Information on this page gives travelers everything they need to know about riding public transit in New York City — including fares, how to pay with OMNY or MetroCards, free transfers, and the weekly fare cap.

NYC Subway & Bus Fares 2025

  • Subway or local bus: $2.90 per ride
  • Express bus: $7.00 per ride
  • Children: Kids under 44 inches ride free with a paying adult (up to 3 per adult)

How to Pay for the Subway in NYC

  • OMNY Tap-to-Pay: You can tap a contactless credit or debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch at the turnstile or bus reader. No sign-up is required — free transfers and the weekly fare cap apply automatically. However, you may choose to create an OMNY account if you want to track your ride history or manage payment methods online.

  • MetroCards (being phased out): For years, MetroCards were the standard way to pay. They are still available at vending machines and station booths, but they will stop being sold in December 2025 and be fully retired by 2026.

    • Buses & Subways: Buses and subways no longer accept cash directly.

    • MetroCard machines & booths: Instead, you can still use cash to buy or refill a MetroCard until they are phased out.

Free Transfers on the NYC Subway & Bus

  • Transfers are free within 2 hours when using the same card or device.
  • Works for subway ↔ bus, bus ↔ subway, and bus ↔ bus.
  • Express buses are separate: $7.00 per ride with no free transfers.

MetroCard vs OMNY (Fare Cap)

  • With OMNY, after 12 paid rides in 7 days, additional rides that week are free.
  • No need to pre-purchase a pass — the system tracks it automatically.
  • Applies to one rider per card/device — tapping for others does not count toward your cap.

👉 Insider Subway Tips

  • On wide avenues, there are often station entrances on both sides of the street — and each side usually serves trains going in opposite directions. Double-check before you tap in.
  • If you’re unsure which train to take, ask the station agent in the booth (if available).
  • If you’re standing in the middle of the train platform, look for the conductor — they lean out of the middle car to open the doors. That’s the perfect time to ask a quick question if you’re unsure.
